Sofia Kharchyk. Beloved daughter of Sergii and Maryna Kharchyk. Cherished big sister of Timothy. Precious granddaughter and niece. Passed away February 25, 2015 at the age of five. Sofia bravely beat cancer but passed away due to complications of a stroke. She will always live on in our hearts!
Sofia’s family would like to thank everyone who prayed and supported them and Sofia.
SOFIA KHARCHYK, a 5-year old daughter of Sergii and Maryna Kharchyk, is suffering from brain cancer (primitive neuroectodermal tumour). She is currently in USA with her parents. The price of girl’s life is thousands of US dollars.
Someone may lose heart, but not the Kharchyk family. The tumour was so aggressive, that the girl’s parents decided to act as quickly as they could: within four days they sold their apartment and went to Israel where they hoped to get efficient medical treatment.
Here’s what Maryna, Sofia’s mother, writes:
«My name is Maryna Kharchyk, I’m the mother of a little girl called Sofia. We are from Ukraine. On 1st June 2011 Ukrainian doctors formed a terrible diagnosis to our daughter – brain tumour 7 cm long. The horrible diagnosis was formed by the doctors of Kharkiv emergency hospital. By that time the little girl had been treated in an infectious diseases hospital for 3 weeks before her illness turned out to be the reaction to the tumor. On 3rd 2011 June Sofia was taken to Kyiv institute of neurosurgery, on 6th June she was examined by a doctor who stated that an urgent operation was needed, which, though, he was not able to perform as the following morning he was flying to a conference. The tumor was getting bigger and bigger with every passing day and it was pressing on the girl’s eye so hard that she couldn’t open it any more. Sofia needed an urgent surgery and we couldn’t wait for the doctor’s return as long as 10 days. Considering the high complexity of the surgery, we decided to apply for help at Ichilov clinic in Israel. Within 4 days our parents and we sold our apartment and everything we could and gathered 40 000 euro for the operation in Ichilov clinic.
The operation took place in due time, and the tumour was successfully ablated. Everything seemed to be fine..
But in 2 weeks later the histology results came leading to another great shock. We were told that our daughter has cancer – low-grade differentiated sarcoma of extremely rare type usually defined as a musculoskeletal cancer making up only 1 % of all malignant tumours. Considering that Sofia’s tumor had formed in the brain it was admitted to be a unique case.
The Ichilov doctors undertook to cure Sofia, but the cost of the treatment came up to over 100 000 USD. Thanks to our family, relatives, friends and thousand of compassionate people around the world we managed to raise the necessary sum for our daughter’s treatment in Israeli clinic.
Unfortunately after almost a year-long course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy our results are deplorable: the last MRI examination made in Israeli clinic revealed another 6 tumours in Sofia’s head.
We don’t lose heart as we have a strong believe that with God’s help and due to efficient treatment our daughter’s little but very strong organism will fight this terrible disease. Actually we are accepted by the Cincinnati Chlidren’s Hospital Medical Center for treatment. Taking into account new diagnosis (PNET) the cost of the treatment in the American clinic is about 242 000 USD. From the earlier-raised money we still have about 26 805 USD. Dear friends, we ask you all the compassionate people to help us. So many things did we go through… We can’t stop halfway, can we? We have a chance and we have to struggle! Please, help us…
Thank you in advance.
With heartfelt gratitude and hope,
The Kharchyk family»
UPD. As for the 15th October, 2013 total cost including treatment, medical staff services, drugs, observation and nursing in hospital is 582 650, 90 $ for the period from May 2012. With your help we managed to raise and pay more than 170 000 $. But the debt is still enormous.
As you can see, this is an ordinary family with limited opportunities. They don’t have such amount of money. However together we could try and raise the necessary sum.
“We are all angels with one wing. Only together we can fly…”
Please, help the desperate parents to raise the required amount of money! Even the smallest donations count. Don’t leave little Sofia and her parents alone in their struggle against this terrible disease!
